Abstract: Employee #1 and a coworker tried to remove a stage prop from a flatbed truck. Usually three or four workers are needed but only two were available. The stage prop is an approximately 9 ft high birthday cake, 8 ft in diameter at the base, with several tiers of graduated layers and candles on top. The prop is mounted on a four-legged steel frame with casters. The cake is transported on a truck that has a 20 in. wide is hydraulically controlled lift step at the back. It takes one person to operate the hydraulic lift. Employee #1 was holding up the unsupported part with the casters still on the lift step. In this position, the outside edge of the prop was still over the main bed of the truck. The coworker told Employee #1 to pull it out further. Employee #1 said, "Lower the ---- thing." The coworker did and the prop became hung up on the truck bed before sliding off. Employee #1 could not hold the weight. The prop came down and crushed his right ankle.
