Abstract: Employee #1 was assigned to help his employer install delineators at the median strip of the 101 freeway, slightly north of the 5th Street exit within the township of Gonzales. Both Employee #1 and the employer were inside the median, working south. Another sub-contractor assigned to the project shouted across the freeway that a truck (belonging to Employee #1's company) was parked on the shoulder and had to be removed immediately. Employee #1 walked across the freeway, moved the truck, dismounted, and started back towards the median. The outside lane was blocked off and closed to traffic and the inside lane was open to through traffic. According to an eyewitness, Employee #1 glanced at the inside lane and saw two vehicles coming. He let the first one pass and attempted to cross the lane before the second one. He hesitated and then ran across the lane, but he was struck down. He was pronounced dead at the scene by attending paramedics.
