Abstract: Employee #1, a lumber salesman for Builder's Emporium, was assigned by the store manager to make stakes from scrap pieces of 1 in. by 2 in. by 8 ft long lumber. He began by cutting the boards into 18 in. pieces using a Dewalt 12 in. radial arm saw. He then lay the pieces at an angle to the saw blade to cut points on the ends. Employee #1 was holding a stake in his left hand and pulling the saw with his right when the blade bound up in the wood. There was no rear fence on that part of the saw and the stake was pulled in. Employee #1's hand was on the wood and it contacted the blade. Four of his fingers were severely lacerated, including damage to the nerves and tendons.
