Abstract: At 3:15 p.m. on or about September 17, 1997, a crew had finished a portion of a trench. One backhoe operator attached the aluminum shoring and lifted it out of the trench, while Employee #1 was standing close by. Another backhoe operator then asked Employee #1 to connect a chain to the shoring, so he could drag it to another location. While the shoring was being dragged, it hit a piece of asphalt, fell over, and struck Employee #1, causing him to fall backward into the trench. The Portland Fire Department's trench rescue team responded, as did an ambulance. Employee #1 was pronounced dead at the scene.
