Abstract: On the morning of March 23, 1993, Employee #1, working as a cutter, was struck by a tree or part of a tree and fatally injured. Four employees were cutting a setting that was mostly alder with a few large fir mixed in. Employee #1 was working close to the middle of the unit. Another employee was trying to fell a large fir across the hillside in the same area. The stump of the fir was 6 to 8 feet above the ground, making the job difficult. All the holding wood was cut off on the faller's side of the stump. Two wedges were put in on the same half of the stump, which forced the tree to go off the stump 90 degrees from the intended direction of fall. The tree hit a 26-inch alder, breaking it off. This alder and the top of the fir came down in the area in which Employee #1 was working, and one or the other struck him in the abdomen.
