Abstract: Some employees were using an 18-ton Grove Crane to unload 20-foot-long pipes from trucks. An assistant superintendent was helping the primary supervisor on the site. The last truck arrived at the worksite at about 3:30 that afternoon. A single-phase, 7600-volt overhead power line passed through the unloading area, about 35 feet above the ground. As the third bundle of pipes was being unloaded, the crane's boom contacted the power line. The supervisor, who was standing next to the right side of the crane, with his hand resting on the crane body, was electrocuted. (Company policy required cranes to maintain a 10-foot clearance from overhead power lines.)
