Abstract: At 1:30 p.m. on May 13, 2020, Employee #1, a 63-year-old employee , was working at a grape vineyard in Acampo, CA. He and some coworkers were suckering grapevines -- thinning shoots by hand. They were working from east to west. They were about 30 plants in from the end of the row, approximately 90 meters (300 feet) from where bathrooms were located. The employee had been working next to his wife. The employee was walking to the bathroom. His wife turned around and saw that the employee had passed out and was lying on the ground about 30 meters (100 feet) away. Coworkers ran to aid the employee. They carried him to the end of the row, called emergency medical services, and started CPR. A coworker was sent to direct emergency services into the vineyard. The fire department and an ambulance arrived, and those personnel took over. The employee was taken to St. Joseph's Medical Center in an ambulance. He was pronounced dead at the hospital at 2:57 p.m. that same day. The employee died of natural causes, in this case a cardiac arrest. The Division learned of the incident at 3:30 p.m. that same day, when the employer reported it to the Modesto District Office. DOSH opened an inspection on the following day. Both the employer and the employee's coworkers did not notice anything wrong or different with the employee. Employee had not complained about not feeling well. The temperature at time of the incident was 23 degrees Celsius (73 degrees Fahrenheit). It peaked later in the day, at around 2:55, at 24 degrees Celsius (75 degrees Fahrenheit).
