WASHINGTON -- The Department of Labor has renewed the charter of the National Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety and Health (NACOSH), as announced today in the Oct. 10 Federal Register. The committee, which advises the Secretaries of Labor and Health and Human Services on occupational safety and health programs, is administered by the Labor Department¿s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
"NACOSH plays an important role in helping OSHA develop and promote standards and guidelines to protect employees from injuries, illnesses, and fatalities on the job," said Assistant Secretary for OSHA Edwin G. Foulke, Jr. "Its members bring vast knowledge and unique insights that assist OSHA¿s mission of ensuring safe and healthful workplaces."
Members of the twelve-person advisory committee, established by the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, are chosen for their knowledge and experience in occupational safety and health. NACOSH includes two members each representing management, labor, the occupational health professions and the occupational safety professions, and four members representing the public. In accordance with federal regulations on advisory committees, the NACOSH charter must be renewed every two years. The current charter expires January 29, 2009, and the new charter will expire two years after the date it is filed.
Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy workplace for their employees. OSHA¿s role is to promote the safety and health of America¿s working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
