Alliance signing slated for Sept. 2 in Oakland, Calif.
SAN FRANCISCO -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the State of California Department of Industrial Relations, Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) and the West Coast Chapter of the International Association of Foundation Drilling (WCC-ADSC) will celebrate their forming a safety and health alliance with a signing ceremony on Sept. 2 at 1 p.m. PDT at the Oakland Federal Building, first floor rotunda, 1301 Clay St., Oakland, Calif.
The alliance will provide WCC-ADSC members and others in the foundation drilling industry, including small businesses and non-English or limited English speaking employees, with information, guidance and access to training resources that will help them protect employees' health and safety. Federal and state OSHA, as well as the WCC-ADSC, will focus on safety and health issues including fall protection; silica, pinch-point and equipment operation hazards; and natural gas hazards associated with drilling and tunneling.
"Preventing occupational injuries and illnesses is our goal," said Ken Atha, regional administrator for federal OSHA in San Francisco. "This alliance will provide WCC-ADSC members and others in the foundation drilling industry with information on drilling and tunneling hazards and safeguards that will help them increase their ability to identify and eliminate hazardous worksite conditions. The alliance represents a model cooperative relationship between government and industry that will benefit employers and employees."
The ADSC, founded in 1972, is an international nonprofit professional trade organization. Its members include specialty subcontractors, design engineers in the private and public sectors, academicians, manufacturers and suppliers. The ADSC establishes standards and specifications, funds research and scholarships, and offers field and management training programs including OSHA certification.
Federal OSHA monitors and supports Cal/OSHA's job safety and health programs. OSHA safety and health alliances are part of U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the safety and health of employees through cooperative relationships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and government agencies. OSHA currently has more than 500 alliances throughout the nation with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.
