USPS in Wichita Achieves Recognition for Safety and Health Excellence from U.S. Department of Labor's OSHA

WICHITA, Kan. -- The U.S. Postal Service in Wichita has earned membership in the prestigious "Star" Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). A recognition ceremony was held today at the USPS Processing and Distribution Center.

"The U.S. Postal Service in Wichita has exhibited excellence in safety and health management," said OSHA Regional Administrator Charles E. Adkins, CIH, in Kansas City. "Their outstanding efforts have included management commitment to safety and health and employee involvement in safety and health programs."

The facility employs 512 workers who process mail for distribution throughout the delivery area.

OSHA's Voluntary Protection Programs recognize and promote effective workplace safety and health management. Companies in VPP achieve average injury rates 50 percent lower than other companies in their industry. Approximately 1,600 work sites representing more than 200 industries nationwide participate in the program. Information kits about the VPP application and approval process are available from the OSHA VPP manager at the Kansas City regional office at (816) 426 5861.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. The role of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach, and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
