CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is recognizing seven resident contractors at Valero Bill Greehey Refinery in Corpus Christi for their outstanding safety and health programs.

Bay LTD, Scott Electric Co., All Tech Inspection, Brock Maintenance Inc., H&S Constructors Inc., Veolia Environmental Services Inc., and Brand Scaffold Services Inc., have earned membership in OSHA's prestigious "Star" Voluntary Protection Program. A recognition ceremony was held today at the refinery on Upriver Road.

"All seven contractors have demonstrated excellence in effective safety and health management," said OSHA Regional Administrator Frank Strasheim in Dallas. "Their outstanding efforts include maintaining injury and illness rates well below the national averages for their industries for the last three years."

Achieving records of zero injuries and illnesses are Veolia Environmental Services, which employs about 26 workers who conduct tank cleaning and hydro blasting operations, and All Tech Inspection with about 14 workers who provide vessel and piping mechanical integrity inspection services.

Maintaining an injury and illness rate 93 percent below their industry average, H&S Constructors employs about 45 workers and provides civil, mechanical, fabrication, equipment erection, piping, structural, crane rental, and ASME code work.

Bay LTD at Valero Bill Greehey Refinery, a construction and maintenance company, provides supplemental maintenance services for Valero, employing about 250 workers at the refinery and maintaining an injury and illness rate 40 percent below their industry average.

Scott Electric Company employs about 115 workers and performs construction, installation, maintenance, and designs all types of electrical equipment. The company has maintained an injury and illness rate 83 percent below the average for its industry.

The VPP recognizes and promotes effective workplace safety and health management. About 1,600 workplaces throughout the U.S., representing 280 industries, have earned OSHA's highest recognition as participants in the program. Participants typically achieve injury and illness rates lower than average for their respective industry.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
