U.S. Department of Labor's OSHA forms safety and health partnership with contractors during the Nationwide Children's Hospital construction project

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Reducing injuries and other work site hazards, developing stronger training programs, and enhancing safety and health during the Nationwide Children's Hospital construction project in Columbus are the goals of a new partnership among the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Turner Construction Co., construction manager for the project.

"Working together to share best practices and to develop and implement safety and health training to contractors and construction workers are the main goals of this partnership," said Deborah Zubaty, OSHA's area director in Columbus. "If we can provide these workers with the knowledge and ability to anticipate, identify and eliminate work-related hazards, we will get that much closer to eliminating job related injuries."

The State of Ohio Bureau of Workers Compensation On-Site Consultation Services will also be involved in the partnership through its Onsite Safety and Health Consultation Program.

The construction project will employ more than 40 contractors and 500 workers to complete the 720,000 square feet, 12-story replacement building for Nationwide Children's Hospital.

OSHA's Strategic Partnership Program is part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of employees through cooperative relationships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and employees. More than 1,400,000 employees and more than 26,000 employers across the U.S. have participated with OSHA in 532 Strategic Partnerships since the program began in 1998 (163 partnerships currently open).

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to promote the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
