Carpenters' apprenticeship facility serves as model for safe work practices
ELK GROVE VILLAGE, Ill. -- The Chicago regional offices of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) joined the national effort to encourage young people to work safely this summer with a kickoff event today featuring construction safety at the Chicago Regional Council of Carpenters' training facility near O'Hare International Airport in Elk Grove Village.
The 2008 Teen Summer Job Safety Campaign event at the carpenters' training facility included supervised work on four houses, all in different stages of completion, with safety tips being provided and demonstrated to apprentices working on the buildings. Representatives from OSHA and the U.S. Labor Department's Wage and Hour Division were on hand to respond to technical questions about workplace safety and the nation's child labor regulations.
"OSHA has a strong and longstanding relationship with the construction community," said Michael G. Connors, OSHA's regional administrator in Chicago. "Working with the Carpenters' Regional Council, we hope to instill a safe work ethic, not only for this summer, but for the rest of our young people's work lives."
This year's Teen Summer Job Safety Campaign was launched today by Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao at events in New York City. Similar events occurred in major cities across the country. Now in the third year of a five-year campaign, the Labor Department is striving to reduce work-related injuries among teens by teaching them on-the-job safety and how to integrate safety principles into their work from the beginning.
The campaign highlights the department's YouthRules! Initiative, which is designed to bring teens, parents, educators, employers, government, unions and advocacy groups together to ensure youth have safe and rewarding work experiences.
