U.S. Department of Labor's OSHA and M.A. Mortenson Co. form safety partnership on GE Health Care Leadership Institute construction project
Minimizing work-related hazards and injuries is top priority

MILWAUKEE -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and builder M.A. Mortenson Co. have formed a safety and health partnership focused on the expansion of the GE Health Care Leadership Institute in Waukesha, Wis. The company has committed to preventing injuries, illnesses and fatalities among 160 employees working on the seven-month construction project.

"This agreement provides an opportunity for OSHA and M.A. Mortenson to demonstrate that we all benefit when management, labor and government dedicate themselves to providing a safe and healthful work environment," said George Yoksas, OSHA's area director in Milwaukee. "We want every employee to go home healthy and uninjured at the end of the day."

M.A. Mortenson Co., a family-owned business, is involved in a wide variety of commercial building projects including the construction of corporate, health care, high tech manufacturing, network/data, sports, hospitality and educational facilities.

OSHA's Strategic Partnership Program is part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of employees through cooperative relationships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and employees. More than one million employees and more than 33,000 employers across the United States have participated with OSHA in more than 440 strategic partnerships since the program began in 1998.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
