U.S. Labor Department's OSHA, Barton Malow Construction and Georgia Tech form safety partnership for new Gwinnett Braves Stadium construction
Signing ceremony slated for Dec. 11 at stadium

ATLANTA -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is forming a new safety partnership with Barton Malow Construction and the Georgia Tech On-site Consultative Service to ensure the highest level of safety and health for employees during construction of the Gwinnett Braves Stadium.

The public and media are invited to attend a signing ceremony on Dec. 11 at 1 p.m. EST at the Triple-A, Minor League Baseball stadium under construction in Lawrenceville, Ga.

"Primary goals of this agreement are to reduce injuries and illnesses, as well as eliminate fatalities during construction of this $45 million project," said G. T. Breezley, OSHA's Atlanta-East area director.

The partnership will focus on increasing the number of employers in the construction industry that have effective safety and health management systems and incident-prevention programs. Emphasis will be on construction industry safety and health principles and practices, as well as communication of safety and health information to employees of contractors working on the site. The agreement requires participating employers to train non-English speaking employees adequately.

The construction project consists of approximately 62 acres and is due to be completed in the spring of 2009.

Companies and groups interested in learning more about OSHA's activities to improve employee safety and health in the Atlanta area may contact OSHA's area office in Tucker, Ga., at 2183 Northlake Parkway., Building 7, Suite 110; telephone 770-493-6644.

OSHA's Strategic Partnership Program is part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of employees through cooperative relationships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and employees. More than 1.4 million employees and nearly 28,000 employers across the United States have participated with OSHA in more than 580 strategic partnerships since the program began in 1998.

OSHA has improved workplace safety and health over the past 38 years. This success is reflected in the latest data (2007) showing the lowest national injury and illness incidence rate that the Bureau of Labor Statistics has ever recorded. OSHA will continue to work diligently to focus its resources where they will have the most impact in assuring that every working man and woman returns home safely every day.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to promote the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
