U.S. Department of Labor's OSHA forms statewide partnership with New Jersey contractors and construction trade organizations to protect employees

PARSIPPANY, N.J. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has joined with the Building Contractors Association of New Jersey, New Jersey General Construction Trades, and New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development On-site Consultation Service to develop a statewide partnership among the construction industry, labor and government.

The key goals of the partnership are to encourage New Jersey contractors to eliminate serious worksite hazards and achieve a high level of employee safety and health, promote cooperation and networking among participating organizations, recognize contractors with exemplary safety and health programs, and encourage participation in OSHA's Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP).

"Cooperation among labor, the construction industry and OSHA is vital to ensuring the safety and health of New Jersey's working men and women," said Patricia K. Clark, regional administrator of OSHA's New York office. "The combined expertise of this federal agency, the building contractors and the New Jersey Department of Labor will help us more effectively encourage employers and employees to commit to safe and healthful work practices."

OSHA's Strategic Partnership Program is part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of employees through cooperative relationships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and employees. More than 1.2 million employees and more than 21,000 employers across the U.S. have participated with OSHA in 484 Strategic Partnerships since the program began in 1998.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing safe and healthful workplaces for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
