NEPTUNE, N.J. - The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) agreed at a recent, formal partnership signing to join L.F. Driscoll Co., the Monmouth and Ocean Counties Building and Construction Trades Councils, the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development, and the Jersey Shore University Medical Center in an effort to protect the employees of all partnership participants at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center expansion and renovation project.
Gary Roskoski, OSHA's area director in Marlton, N.J., represented the agency at the signing ceremony.
The proposed 380,386 square foot expansion and renovation will include a new five-floor bed tower, a diagnostic and treatment pavilion, an atrium to connect the pavilion to the existing hospital building and a parking garage. More than 450 employees are expected to work on the $300 million project that is scheduled to be completed in 2010.
The primary goal of the partnership is to prevent injuries, illnesses and fatalities on the construction site through a cooperative relationship between OSHA, L.F. Driscoll Co. and the company's contractors. L.F. Driscoll will develop, implement and maintain effective, comprehensive safety and health programs, and serve as a principal safety resource in support of 33 participating subcontractors.
"This agreement gives us the tools to eliminate serious worksite accidents in the construction industry and recognize those contractors with exemplary safety and health programs," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator based in New York. "Cooperation among labor, construction, the states and OSHA is vital to ensure the safety and health of employees."
