U.S. Department of Labor's OSHA and ACORN Form Alliance in N.J. to Provide Job Safety and Health Training for Hispanic Employees

NEWARK, N.J. -- Helping New Jersey's Hispanic employees stay safe and healthy on-the-job is the purpose of a statewide alliance announced by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the state chapter of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN).

ACORN is the nation's largest community organization of low- and moderate-income families, working together for social justice and stronger communities. The alliance will focus on providing ACORN members, particularly non-English speaking employees, with training and education to recognize, avoid or correct occupational hazards.

Under the alliance, OSHA and ACORN will offer training in Spanish and English, including a course for bilingual employees to learn to become trainers so they can help to communicate more easily with those who have limited English speaking ability.

OSHA health and safety alliances are part of the U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's effort to improve health and safety for employees through cooperative partnerships.

The Avenel, Hasbrouk Heights, Marlton and Parsippany area offices of OSHA are participating in the alliance. The agreement will remain in effect for two years.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
