U.S. Department of Labor's OSHA recognizes Amazon.com in New Castle, Del., for continued success in employee safety and health

NEW CASTLE, Del. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) today recertified Amazon.com's Delaware Fulfillment Center in New Castle at the "star," or highest, level in its prestigious Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP). During a ceremony at the center, Vincent Soss, compliance assistance specialist for OSHA's Wilmington Area Office, presented the facility with a recertification plaque.

"Amazon.com's Delaware Fulfillment Center consistently has demonstrated a strong commitment to employee safety and health," said Domenick Salvatore, director of OSHA's Wilmington office. "The company has maintained an injury and illness rate below the industry average for three years."

The Delaware Fulfillment Center services millions of online customers. The center predominately warehouses books and music CDs, and has 450 employees.

Designed for worksites with comprehensive, successful safety and health programs, the VPP is open to all industries and to employers with injury rates below their respective industries' national averages.

More than 1,950 worksites nationwide have earned entry into OSHA's VPP. Over the years, the VPP has proven to be an effective means of reducing injuries, illnesses, fatalities and costs, while fostering a more productive workforce and increasing employee morale.

OSHA has improved workplace safety and health over the past 37 years. This success is reflected in the latest data (2006) showing the lowest national injury and illness incidence rate that the Bureau of Labor Statistics has ever recorded. OSHA will continue to work diligently to focus its resources where they will have the most impact in assuring that every working man and woman returns home safely every day.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to promote the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
