U.S. Labor Department's OSHA invites employees, employers and families to second Hudson Valley Safety and Health Fair in White Plains, N.Y., on Nov. 8

TARRYTOWN, N.Y. -- Employees, employers and their families from the Hudson Valley and greater New York City area are invited to attend the second Hudson Valley Safety and Health Fair, to be held Saturday, Nov. 8, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST, at the Westchester County Center in White Plains, N.Y.

The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is co-sponsoring the free event with the Hudson Valley and Metropolitan chapters of the American Society of Safety Engineers and the Construction Industry Council of Westchester and Hudson Valley Inc. The fair will feature safety and health workshops, health information and screenings, demonstrations, prizes and activities for children.

"This fair is a wonderful opportunity for families to spend a day together having fun while also acquiring vital and useful information to help them guard their health and well-being on the job, at home and on the road," said Diana Cortez, director of OSHA's area office in Tarrytown.

Among the fair's highlights:
  • Safety and health workshops in English and Spanish on chemical and electrical hazards; scaffolding; falls; trenching; machine guarding; fire safety and emergency preparedness; traffic safety; landscaping hazards; work with tools and powered equipment; personal protective equipment; and rights and protections for employees, young workers and employers.

  • Live demonstrations and information booths on electrical hazards; home fires; fire extinguisher use; bicycle safety; seatbelt safety; response to hazardous chemical spills; car rollover and seatbelt simulators.

  • Health agencies will provide free health screenings for diabetes, HIV, glaucoma and other health issues. Fair participants also will have the opportunity to check their blood pressure, heart and breathing, cholesterol, BMI/Weight and eyes so they can become more aware of the importance of prevention and early detection of health issues.

  • Entertainment and activities for children; refreshments; free door prizes; and a grand prize.

The Westchester County Center, at 198 Central Ave. in White Plains, is accessible by subway, bus, train and car. Directions are available at www.countycenter.biz/Directions.htm and www.countycenter.biz/DirectionsTrain.htm. For more information about the fair, contact Tom McCarthy at 914-524-7510, ext. 309.
