Companies and employees receive safety mentoring and training to enhance workplace safety
SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Syracuse Area Office of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) today renewed its successful alliance with the Manufacturers Association of Central New York (MACNY) to provide the region's manufacturing industries with information, guidance and training to help reduce and prevent workplace hazards.
"This is an exemplary alliance, marked by the quality and consistency of training and commitment by all parties," said Christopher Adams, OSHA's area director in Syracuse. "Through it, we've been able to reach hundreds of employees and dozens of manufacturers in central New York with vital training and information."
A key component of the alliance, which was created in 2004, is its mentoring program, under which large manufacturing businesses with in-house safety departments, and safety and health managers, partner with and mentor smaller businesses.
"An effective safety and health management system is a critical tool for reducing hazards and enhancing workplace safety and health," said Robert Kulick, OSHA's regional administrator in New York. "To date, five small companies have requested and received mentoring, and we expect more to take advantage of this program."
Under the alliance, more than 230 individuals have attended one-day seminars on recordkeeping, emergency preparedness, ergonomics, and other safety and health topics, or taken the OSHA 10-hour general industry course focusing on small to medium-sized manufacturing plants. In addition, OSHA and MACNY hold monthly meetings for association members on current safety topics, and 325 MACNY member companies receive a monthly newsletter containing safety and health information. The renewal was signed by OSHA's Kulick and Adams and by MACNY President Randy Wolken.
OSHA safety and health alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of employees through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and government agencies. OSHA currently has more than 480 alliances throughout the nation with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.
