U.S. Labor Department's OSHA and Bronx Chamber of Commerce form alliance to help chamber members enhance employee safety and health

NEW YORK -- Helping the borough's businesses protect their employees against on-the-job injuries and illnesses is the goal of a new alliance between the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Bronx Chamber of Commerce.

"This is an exceptional opportunity to provide a wide cross-section of businesses throughout the Bronx with vital knowledge and training that will help them proactively identify and effectively address potential hazards to their employees," said Patricia K. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator in New York.

OSHA and the chamber will work together to develop training and education programs for chamber members that will focus on identifying, reducing and preventing hazardous conditions in both general industry and construction. The training will cover such hazards as falls, electrocution, lead and silica exposures, ergonomic injuries and workplace violence. In addition, trainers will teach students to identify and avoid hazards posed by moving equipment and machinery, such as being struck, getting caught in moving parts or getting caught between objects.

The alliance also will encourage and assist chamber members in developing, implementing or improving their own safety and health programs; sharing best practices and effective approaches to workplace safety and health; participating in outreach activities; and seeking innovative approaches to safety and health training.

"Ensuring workplace safety and health is good business," said Diana Cortez, director of OSHA's area office in Tarrytown, N.Y., which oversees the Bronx. "Injuries and illnesses can carry a heavy toll in human and financial capital. Reducing hazards can lower costs, improve morale, increase productivity and help employees to return home healthy and whole at the end of each workday."

The alliance was signed April 23 at the chamber's headquarters by its chief executive officer, Lenny Caro, and by OSHA's Patricia K. Clark and Diana Cortez. OSHA safety and health alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of employees through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and government agencies. OSHA currently has 468 alliances throughout the nation with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.
