U.S. Department of Labor's OSHA launches safety and health alliance to protect employees in Union County, N.J.

ELIZABETH, N.J. -- The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has joined with the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development On-Site Consultation Program and the Gateway Regional Chamber of Commerce to help protect employee safety and health, prevent accidents, and foster a culture of safe and healthy working environments.

Louis Ricca Jr., acting regional administrator in New York, and Robert Kulick, director of OSHA's area office in Avenel, N.J., represented the agency at a ceremony held today to sign the alliance agreement.

OSHA, the New Jersey department and the Gateway chamber will use their collective expertise to develop training along with informational and educational programs that promote and improve employee safety and health in Union County, N.J. The training will focus on enabling employers to better understand OSHA's requirements and enforcement procedures, as well as foster the implementation of effective safety and health management systems.

"Through this alliance, we will work together to provide leadership and guidance, and set a positive example for employers and employees in Union County,¿ said Kulick. "We will encourage best practices, guidelines and procedures that improve workplace safety.¿

OSHA safety and health alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of employees through cooperative programs. OSHA currently has more than 470 alliances throughout the nation with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthy workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to promote the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
