SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- University of Sacred Heart (USH) employees and students will benefit from a new alliance between the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the university.
The alliance will develop training and education programs focusing on such workplace safety and health issues as indoor air quality, noise exposure, fire protection, radiation and ergonomics. Training will also include an Associate Safety Professional preparatory course for students and safety and health professionals and an internship program in which USH students will work with OSHA on current occupational safety and health issues.
"This alliance seeks to educate both the university's employees and its students about important workplace hazards and the steps they can take to identify and eliminate those hazards," said Patricia A. Clark, OSHA's regional administrator.
"We have in this alliance with the university an opportunity to better protect employees and enhance the safety and health profession in Puerto Rico," said Jose A. Carpena, OSHA's area director in San Juan. "Today's students can be tomorrow's safety and health professionals and the working people of Puerto Rico will benefit."
The alliance was signed Dec. 4, 2006, in San Juan by Clark and Carpena of OSHA; Jose Jaime Rivera, president, USH; and Lydia Espinet, Ph.D., USH dean of academic affairs. OSHA safety and health alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of workers through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and government agencies. OSHA currently has more than 460 alliances with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.
