U.S. Department of Labor's OSHA and Puget Sound Shipbuilders Form Alliance To Foster Safer Shipyards in Washington State

SEATTLE -- The U.S. Labor Department's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Puget Sound Shipbuilders Association (PSSA) members have agreed to form an alliance to use their expertise to encourage prevention of injuries and illnesses and to promote sharing of best practices and technical knowledge for safer shipyards. The new alliance will be signed by OSHA and the PSSA in a ceremony at Foss Maritime Co. in Seattle, Feb. 23, at 10 a.m.

Under the alliance, OSHA and PSSA will develop training and educational tools to be used for improving shipyard safety and health programs. Topics will include safety training, hazard recognition, management systems and health hazards.

Richard Terrill, OSHA regional administrator in Seattle, said, "This alliance will allow OSHA and the PSSA to combine resources to get effective workplace safety and health messages out to shipyard employees and supervisors. Information, training and guidance in safe work practices and employee/employer rights and responsibilities under the law will help reduce the number of fatalities and injuries that occur in this industry."

Allen Rainsberger, PSSA president, will sign the alliance on behalf of the association.

OSHA safety and health alliances are part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of employees through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and government agencies. OSHA currently has more than 450 alliances throughout the nation with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.

Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
