Seeks to enhance safety for employees in central/western Massachusetts and Connecticut
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Enhancing safety and health for construction and general industry employees in central and western Massachusetts and Connecticut is the goal of a new alliance between the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Safety Council of Western New England (SCWNE).
"Under the alliance, OSHA's Springfield, Mass., and Hartford, Conn., offices will work with SCWNE to develop safety and health training and education programs, as well as safety and health management systems, for the council's members," said Mary Hoye, OSHA's area director in Springfield.
Pointing out that the training will focus on reducing and preventing employees' exposure to hazards encountered in both construction and general industry, C. William Freeman III, OSHA's area director in Hartford, added, "Such hazards can encompass exposure to lead and silica, falls, electric shock and being struck by or caught in machinery."
OSHA and SCWNE will share information on best practices and effective approaches to workplace safety and health. They also will promote and encourage SCWNE members' participation in OSHA's cooperative programs, including its Voluntary Protection Programs, safety and health consultation, and the Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program.

OSHA safety and health alliances are part of Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of employees through cooperative partnerships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and government agencies. OSHA currently has 456 alliances throughout the nation with organizations committed to fostering safety and health in the workplace.
