U.S. Labor Department's OSHA joins with Dimeo Construction Co. and state of Rhode Island
PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence Area Office of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has signed a site safety partnership with Dimeo Construction Co. of Providence and the state of Rhode Island's 21(d) safety consultation program (RICP) to provide safety and health training to 41 subcontractors working on the reconstruction of the Ocean House Hotel in Watch Hill, R.I.
"This partnership will enhance the safety and health of workers on this major project by providing them with the knowledge and ability to recognize, prevent and avoid construction-related hazards," said Marthe Kent, OSHA's New England regional administrator. "This cooperation will be of particular value to those smaller contractors who may have limited training resources of their own."
Under the partnership, Dimeo, the project's construction manager, will develop and implement a comprehensive safety and health program that equals or exceeds OSHA guidelines. It will include OSHA's 10-hour construction safety course for supervisors and employees; regular, documented in-house safety inspections; weekly safety training sessions; and the collection and analysis of injury and illness data as a tool for continual improvement of the safety and health program.
"An important goal of the partnership is to build and reinforce a culture of workplace safety and health that will benefit these contractors and their employees on this and future jobs," said Patrick Griffin, OSHA's area director for Rhode Island. "An effective and systematic approach to safety and health can pay dividends in enhanced productivity, increased morale, and a reduction in injuries and illnesses and their associated human and financial costs."
The $80 million project involves the restoration of the 120,495 square foot hotel and the construction of a 31,928 foot underground parking garage with completion expected around June 2010. The partnership was recently signed at the site. Kent and Griffin signed for OSHA; signing for Dimeo were President Bradford Dimeo, Chief Operating Officer/Executive Vice President Stephen Rutledge and Corporate Safety Director Bob Kunz; Project Manager James A. Bruckshaw signed for the RICP.
OSHA's Strategic Partnership Program is part of U.S. Labor Secretary Elaine L. Chao's ongoing efforts to improve the health and safety of employees through cooperative relationships with trade associations, labor organizations, employers and employees. More than 1.4 million employees and nearly 28,000 employers across the United States have participated with OSHA in more than 580 strategic partnerships since the program began in 1998.
