General Description

Synonyms: Abate; Temefos; O,O,O'O'-Tetramethyl O,O'-thiodi-p-phenylene phosphorothioate; Phosphorothioic acid, O,O-dimethyl ester, O,O-diester with 4,4'-thiodiphenol

OSHA IMIS Code Number: 0005

IMIS Name History: Abate prior to 9/1/89

Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) Registry Number: 3383-96-8

NIOSH Registry of Toxic Effects of Chemical Substances (RTECS) Identification Number: TF6890000

NIOSH Pocket Guide to Chemical Hazards, Temephos: chemical description, physical properties, potentially hazardous incompatibilities, and more

Exposure Limits

OSHA Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL):

General Industry: 29 CFR 1910.1000 Z-1 Table -- 15 mg/m3 TWA

Maritime: 29 CFR 1915.1000 Table Z-Shipyards -- 15 mg/m3 TWA

American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) Threshold Limit Value (TLV): 1 mg/m3 TWA; Inhalable fraction and vapor. Skin; Appendix A4 - Not Classifiable as a Human Carcinogen; BEIA - see Acetylcholinesterase Inhibiting Pesticides

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Recommended Exposure Limit (REL): 10 mg/m3 TWA

Health Factors

Potential Symptoms: Irritation of eyes, blurred vision; headache, dizziness; dyspnea (breathing difficulty); salivation, sweating; abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea

Health Effects: Irritation-Eyes, Nose, Throat, Lungs, Skin---Marked (HE14); Nervous System Disturbances---Cholinesterase inhibition (HE6); Mutagen (HE2); LD50 (Oral, rat) 20 mg/kg

Affected Organs: Eyes, respiratory system, CNS, cardiovascular system, blood cholinesterase

Notes:

  1. Temephos was reported to be genotoxic and mutagenic in vitro at concentrations similar to those used to control mosquito larvae.
  2. Temephos can be absorbed through the skin and is metabolized to an active oxon derivative by the cytochrome P450 system
