    Alliance Overview

    OSHA and National Safety Council, South Louisiana Chapter Alliance provides members and others with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect employees’ health and safety, particularly in reducing exposure to traffic collisions and related worker deaths and injuries, providing first aid, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training awareness, and deliver and implement safety and health management system programs.

  3. Implementation Team Metings:

    Team meetings made up of representatives of both organizations were held periodically throughout the year to discuss ideas and strategies on disseminating information concerning training and education, outreach and communication and promoting a national dialogue on workplace safety and health.

    TTraining schedules for member and non-members facilities and organizations were forwarded to the General Membership, and local safety organizations.

    Members of OSHA’s Baton Rouge Area Office participated in the National Safety Council’s annual awards ceremony.

    OSHA’s Baton Rouge Area Office, Compliance Assistance staff conducted training presentations for National Safety Council classes. Compliance Assistance provided a first-hand perspective for “Introduction to OSHA” course segments, along with updates on current OSHA emphasis activities. Compliance Assistance also provided information and guidance on the development and implementation of effective safety and health management systems.

    OSHA publications were displayed at the National Safety Council’s office for distribution to the general public.

    OSHA’s Baton Rouge Area Office, FY 2010, Compliance Assistance newsletter, summarizing national and area incident data, was forwarded to National Safety Council members for information and further distribution.


  5. Promoting the National Dialogue on Workplace Safety and Health

    Events

    Throughout the year, National Safety Council’s South Louisiana Chapter participated in luncheons with local safety organization such as the “Delta Safety Society” and the New Orleans chapter of the American Society of Engineers to promote national safety dialogue.

    National Safety Council South Louisiana Chapter attended local and state traffic safety committees promoting driver safety and the reduction of traffic accidents.

    National Safety Council participated in facilitating joint meetings with the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) New Orleans Chapter and Delta Safety Society.

    National Safety Council South Louisiana Chapter sits as on the Southeastern Louisiana University OSH&E Advisory Committee.

    National Safety Council South Louisiana Chapter hosted a monthly meeting of the New Orleans River Region Chapter of the Louisiana Association of Nationally registered Emergency Medical Technicians. Topics for discussion included first aid, CPR and AED training awareness.

    National Safety Council South Louisiana Chapter, along with the city of Hammond is currently in the final stages of attaining the World Health Organization’s (WHO) designation of “Safe Community America.” The title communicates that the designated area is comprised of communities that have demonstrated leadership in safety promotion and injury prevention and have made an investment efforts to ensure that their community is a safe place to live, work and visit.

    National Safety Council South Louisiana Chapter attended and provided an information booth and speaker at the 2010, Louisiana Governor’s Safety and Health Conference in Baton Rouge.

    Members of the National Safety Council South Louisiana Chapter currently sit on the planning board for the 2011 Governor’s Safety and Health Conference.

  6. Results

    National Safety Council South Louisiana Chapter members now have access to a greater amount of educational information and resources as a result of its alliance with OSHA’s cooperative program.

    The OSHA area office’s Compliance Assistance Specialist (CAS) continues to provide OSHA update presentations and serves an additional resource to National Safety Council South Louisiana Chapter through participation in the general monthly meetings, training sessions and special events.

    As scheduling allows, the CAS provided literature that included brochures, pamphlets and training materials. Topics included but were not limited to: VPP, emergency preparedness, work zone safety, construction safety, pandemic flu and emergency preparedness.

    National Safety Council South Louisiana Chapter currently offering OSHA 10 & 30 hr class in both general industry and Construction throughout the year.

    National Safety Council South Louisiana in conjunction with the University of Texas-Arlington, an OSHA Outreach Training Institute, is now offering OTI classes at its Metairie office.

    National Safety Council South Louisiana Chapter hosted classes held by Connor Institute on Lead Safety for renovation, repair, and painting.
