I. Alliance Background

Overview:

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Atlanta-West Area Office and MUST Ministries Alliance is focused on providing MUST Ministries clients and others with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect the health and safety of workers. Emphasis will be placed on effectively communicating with hard-to reach groups, such as the socio-economically disadvantaged workers and at-risk youth.

September 27, 2011 through September 26, 2012

II. Implementation Team Membership and Contributors:

The implementation team included representatives from the OSHA Atlanta-West Area Office and MUST Ministries. Quarterly implementation team meetings were conducted during the following periods: October 2011; January 2012; April 2012; and July, 2012.

Training and Education

Events

  • In October 2011, the Compliance Assistance Specialist (CAS) in the Atlanta-West Area Office and MUST Ministries volunteers (authorized trainers) provided an OSHA 10-hr General Industry course to unemployed individuals looking for jobs. Additionally, through donations from MUST Ministries and local employers, students that successfully completed the training session were provided with the following equipment: composite toe boots; reflective vest; gloves; eye protection; ear plugs; and helmet shade cloth. A total of 15 students participated in this training program.
  • In April 2012, the CAS in the Atlanta-West Area Office and MUST Ministries volunteers (authorized trainers) provided an OSHA 10-hr Construction Industry course to unemployed individuals looking for jobs. Additionally, through donations from MUST Ministries and local employers, students that successfully completed the training session were provided with the following equipment: composite toe boots; gloves; eye protection; and ear plugs. A total of 7 students participated in this training program.

Outreach and Communication

Events

  • In July 2012, a representative of MUST Ministries participated in an outreach meeting with the OSHA Atlanta-West Area Office staff. During this meeting the group discussed the expansion of the MUST Ministries Alliance, as well as the benefits of providing outreach visits to visit low-income schools, shelters and participating in mentoring programs.

IV. Results

  • During this period, a total of 22 students received safety and health training through the OSHA 10-hr courses for the General and Construction Industries. Additionally, 73% of these students were later successfully placed in full-time job by MUST Ministries after receiving this training. By comparison, according to MUST Ministries, its other programs have an employment placement rate of 30%.

V. Upcoming Milestones in FY 2013

  • Continue to effectively promote safety and health through the MUST Ministries Alliance
  • Continue to effectively promote OSHA initiatives and campaigns, such the Heat Illness Prevention and Residential Fall Protection through the MUST Ministries Alliance
  • Continue to effectively promote workplace safety and health rights through the MUST Ministries Alliance
