Overview

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Georgia Institute of Technology Safety, Health, and Environmental Technology Division (Georgia Tech) and American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Trench Safety Task Force Alliance is focused on reducing and preventing exposure to trenching and excavation hazards.

II. Implementation Team and Contributors:

Metro Atlanta Area - Representatives from OSHA, ASSE and Georgia Tech conducted the following meeting:

  • ASSE Trenching Task Force meeting were conducted in March 2009 and June 22, 2009
  • Upcoming ASSE Trenching Task Force meeting is scheduled for March 19, 2010

Evaluation Period:

January 31, 2009, through December 31, 2009

III. Events and Products

Training and Education

Events
  • The group presented during the Georgia Tech OTI 502 Course on the following dates:
    • January 13, 2009, for approximately 30 attendees
    • March 3, 2009, for approximately 35 attendees
    • March 4, 2009, for approximately 30 attendees
    • April 14, 2009, for approximately 28 attendees
    • July 14, 2009, for approximately 42 attendees
    • October 14, 2009, for approximately 30 attendees
    • October 15, 2009, for approximately 30 attendees

  • 4-hour trenching and excavation safety training session was conducted by OSHA and the ASSE for members of the Decatur Fire Station in DeKalb County, Georgia, on the following dates in February 2009:
    • 2/10/09 Training conducted for Decatur Fire Fighters Shift A
    • 2/11/09 Training conducted for Decatur Fire Fighters Shift B
    • 2/18/09 Training conducted for Decatur Fire Fighters Shift C

  • 4-hour trenching and excavation safety training session was conducted by OSHA and the ASSE for members of the Bartow County Fire and Rescue Service in Cartersville, GA, on the following dates in July 2009:
    • 7/27/09 Training conducted for Bartow County/Northwest Georgia Fire Fighters Group 1
    • 7/28/09 Training conducted for Bartow County/Northwest Georgia Fire Fighters Group 1
Products
  • No new products during this period; however, existing outreach materials were distributed in FY 2009.
Outreach and Communication

Events
  • On January 28, 2009, the group conducted a presentation for the Atlanta Metro Area Fire Chiefs during its monthly meeting.
  • On June 23, 2009, the group conducted a presentation for the Bartow County/Northwest Georgia Area Fire Chiefs during its monthly meeting.
