Region 5 News Release V-58 Date: November 22, 2002 Contact: Juan Solano Phone: (312)353-6976 OSHA Training Will Help Employers Identify Machine Guarding Hazards Machinery Safety Training at Kankakee Community College on Nov. 25 AURORA, Ill. -- To help employers prevent amputations and debilitating injuries in the workplace, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs, Onsite Safety and Health Consultation Program, will present a seminar on machinery safeguarding on Monday, Nov. 25, at Kankakee Community College. The program is sponsored by a partnership between OSHA, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs' Onsite Safety and Health Consultation Program and Illinois Small Business Development Center Network, and Northern Illinois University's National Safety Education Center. "Amputations occur most often when workers operate unguarded or inadequately safeguarded machinery. This training will help employers identify and correct machine guarding hazards in the workplace," said Michael G. Connors, OSHA regional administrator in Chicago. Machine guarding and related machinery violations consistently rank among the top 10 of OSHA citations issued. Workers who operate and maintain machinery suffer approximately 18,000 amputations, lacerations, crushing injuries, abrasions, and over 800 deaths per year. OSHA compliance experts will help employers identify and control amputation hazards caused by mechanical components, mechanical motion in or near these components, and activities performed by workers during operation of machinery. The training will help employers identify OSHA standards that apply to their operations. The seminar will be held from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Kankakee Community College, 817 River Road, Kankakee. The fee for the seminar, handout materials, and refreshments is $25. To register, contact Ken Crite at 815-933-0376. ###
