Statement of Charles N. Jeffress
Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health
April 6, 1998
Contact: Stephen Gaskill (202) 219-6091
"Today, the U.S. Court of Appeals allowed OSHA to move forward with its alternative enforcement strategy, which we developed after the Court stayed our Cooperative Compliance Program (CCP). This alternative strategy continues our emphasis on tough enforcement, but does not include the partnership element that made the CCP such an innovative approach to OSHA enforcement."

"I know that the many companies that signed up to partner with us are disappointed that the CCP cannot go forward yet. To those businesses and others, I can only say that OSHA stands by to provide help and assistance to make all workplaces safer. We are ready to keep our side of the bargain once we are vindicated by the Court."
