Statement of Charles N. Jeffress
Assistant Secretary of Labor for Occupational Safety and Health

"Worker Memorial Day reminds us that we must do all we can to
protect the lives and well-being of America's Workers. With more
than 100 million employees to protect in more than 6 million work
sites, OSHA can never have enough resources. That is why it is so
important that we leverage our investments wisely. The Cooperative
Compliance Program is designed to do just that. It would have allowed
us to channel our efforts where they were most needed -- to those work
sites where injury and illness rates are the highest. We expect to win
in court, and we look forward to putting this program back on track
as soon as possible."
