Mr. Charles Pertuit Dear Mr. Pertuit: This is in response to your November 5, 1996, letter enclosed with your forwarding December 2, 1996, letter. In your November 5 letter, you requested clarification of paragraph 1910.179(b)(2). Your questions and our replies follow. Question: Does paragraph 1910.179 imply that only the design specifications of ANSI B30.2.0 must be met and that only the 1967 revision applies and not any subsequent revisions? Reply: Only the design specifications of ANSI B30.2.0 apply to all new overhead and gantry cranes constructed and installed on or after August 31, 1971. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) accepts employers' use of the current revision to national consensus standards, such as ANSI B30.2.0, in place of earlier revisions incorporated by reference or adopted into OSHA standards. This acceptance is predicated on using the current revision, such that at least the same level of safety and health is provided, as required by complying with OSHA standards. Thank you for your interest in employee safety and health. If we can be of further assistance, please contact the Office of Safety Compliance Assistance, Mr. Ronald J. Davies, telephone # 202 219-8031, extension 110.
Sincerely,
