August 2, 1988 Mr. Louis F. Allen Chairman/Chief Officer The Fireline Group P.O. Box 6470 Erie, Pennsylvania 16512 Dear Mr. Allen: This is in response to your July 20, 1988, letter requesting an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) interpretation for the effective date for the installation of shut-off type nozzles on standpipe hose. Your understanding is almost correct, as open tip nozzles must be replaced with the shut-off type nozzles by, rather than after, July 1, 1981. Enclosed is a copy of the Friday, September 12, 1980 Federal Register describing this requirement in the "Fire Protection" standards preamble. This discussion, starting on the right hand column of page 60691 to page 60692, explains why these open tip nozzles must be replaced with the shut-off type nozzle and the effective date of this requirement. We trust this information will be helpful to you. If we can be of any further assistance to you, please feel free to contact us. Sincerely, Thomas J. Shepich, Director Directorate of Compliance Programs |
