Mr. Robert T. Loughlin Dear Mr. Loughlin: This is in response to your letter requesting clarification on OSHA requirements for hoist cables on cranes. OSHA Standard 1910.179(h)(2)(i) on page 23700 of the Federal Register dated June 27, 1974 Volume 39 #125 specifies that hoist cables shall meet the crane manufacturer's specifications. Further, 1910.179(h)(2)(viii) requires that all replacement cables be the same size, grade and construction as the original cable. The Standard in no way specifies cable size, strength or type because of the many variables that must be considered. We have under separate cover several OSHA brochures including the above noted Federal Register.
Sincerely,
