SUBJECT: Automatic Rail Clamps, Cranes

This is in reply to your memorandum dated February 23, 1976 on the subject title.

We have contacted the B30.2 [committee] of ANSI and were advised by Mr. R.W. Adams, member of the B30.2 committee, that the intent of section 2-1.3.1c was to require automatic rail clamps in outdoor ore storage bridge cranes. These are gantry type cranes having spans over 100 ft.

This indicates that 29 CFR 1910.179(b)(4) applies only to outdoor storage bridge gantry type cranes having spans approximately 100 ft. or more in length.
