Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to major fracture and concussion hazards due to material falling from over head structures due to the severe corrosion and deterioration of the roof structure: a) Iron Transportation Division 1) Sinter Plant Department - There were several areas of the Sinter Plant roof that were severely deteriorated and in danger of collapse. Steel sheeting sections that collapsed in some areas pieces dangling overhead above active work areas, observed August 8, 1989. Among other methods, one feasable and acceptable abatement methodto correct this hazard would be to correct all structural deficiencies as noted in the in-house structural survey conductedby Orbital Engineering.
