Speaker Notes:
Through these Alliances, OSHA is working with a field of experts in the maritime industry in order
to use their expert
knowledge to develop practical safety educational and outreach material.
All 3 Alliances focus on the following topics:
- Address increasing access to and developing safety and health information and outreach
programs, including electronic assistance tools, for shipbuilding employees.
- Familiarize OSHA personnel and industry safety and health professionals with best practices.
- Share current shipbuilding injury, hazard and workforce trends.
All three Implementation Team’s are currently working on projects such as sharing injury and
illness data with OSHA and reviewing and revising certain sections of the OSHA Training Institute’s
maritime industry training course for OSHA personnel.
ASA and NSRP’s Implementation Teams have agreed to work on putting together a maritime safety
workshop at the next National Safety Council Congress in September. The proposal has been accepted
by the NSC.
An example of a completed outreach and communication activity through the Alliance Program is the
SCA Safety Seminar. At the October 29 meeting in Portland, OR, Carl Halgren, Region X - Portland
Area Director updated shipyard safety and health professionals on the status of the OSHA Shipyard
Employment eTool.
On Wednesday, March 10 at the SCA Safety Seminar in Pascagoula, MS, SCA will be holding a panel
discussion on the Alliance Program. Jess McCluer (national SCA Alliance Coordinator), Clyde Payne,
AD Jackson, MS (Northrop Grumman Ship Systems and its Unions Alliance point person) and Carl
Halgren, AD Portland, OR (SCA Region X Alliance point person) will be participating on the panel
and provide updates on their respective Alliance’s work.
All three organizations are contributing material i.e. pictures and articles that will
be included in the Ship and Boat building and Repair OSHA publication.
