OSHA and Hawaii Alliance for Safety and Health
Closeout Report

On November 25, 2002, the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) Region 9; the OSHA Region 9 Education Center, University of California in San Diego; the Associated Builders & Contractors Building Industry Association of Hawaii, National Association of Homebuilders; the Hawaii Hotel Association; the Ship Repair Association of Hawaii; the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA, Hawaii Chapter); American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE, Hawaii Chapter); the Veterans of Safety, Hawaii Chapter; and the Honolulu Federal Field Safety & Health Council formed the Hawaii Alliance for Safety and Health.

The goal of the alliance was to promote awareness and knowledge of safety and health through the joint efforts of the participants. The primary emphasis was on the delivery of safety and health training and education for the benefit of Hawaii and the Pacific Rim Community.

OSHA Region IX has decided to conclude the Alliance as of July 31, 2009. OSHA and the alliance members will continue to work together through other avenues to promote awareness and knowledge of safety and health.

A number of successes resulted from the organizations' work together to meet the agreement's goals:
* Through the Alliance, a course on Construction Ergonomics, co-sponsored by the Hawaii Laborers' Union and Honolulu Community College, was conducted at the Honolulu Community College on March 18, 2005.

* Through the Alliance, an OSHA 501 "Trainer Course in Occupational Safety and Health Standards for General Industry" course co-sponsored Chaminade University's Pacific Training Center and the University of California at San Diego's OSHA Training Institute was conducted at the University of Hawaii, Hilo campus, from June 6-9, 2005.

* Through the Alliance, an OSHA 2250 "Principles of Ergonomics" Course sponsored by Chaminade University's Pacific Training Center and the University of California at San Diego's OSHA Training Institute was conducted at the Pacific Training Center, Oahu, from July 11-14, 2005.
