Mobile OSHA Area Office Annual Status Report
June 22, 2006

I. Alliance Background:

Mobile County School System, American Society of Safety Engineers, Mobile United and Safe State Consultation Program Alliance to provide MCPSS, Mobile United employees and others with information, guidance, and access to training resources in order to help protect employees’ health and safety, in particular youth workers, by addressing musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), workplace violence, bloodborne pathogens, falls, chemical exposure, machine guarding, electrical, material handling hazards.

Overview

This alliance was formed between the participating agencies and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) with the purpose of promoting safe and healthful working conditions for youth workers in the Mobile Area.

Implementation Team Membership:

Representatives from OSHA, Mobile County Public Schools, ASSE - Mobile Chapter, Safe State, and Mobile United.

March 16, 2005, through June 22, 2006.

III. Events and Products

Training and Education

Event
  • February, March, and April 2006, Alliance members provided OSHA 10-hr training at local Career/Technical School in Mobile. Over 94 students from Bryant have completed the course.
Product
  • Alliance members worked with state educators to develop a curriculum for the educators to adopt at every career technical school
Outreach and Communications

Events
  • The Alliance members gave a presentation to the State of Alabama Dept of Education on the success of the alliance.
     
  • The Mobile Alabama County School Board presented recognition plaques to alliance members on the successful training provided to students February 14, 2006.

Promoting the National Dialogue on Workplace Safety and Health

Events
  • This Alliance has held meeting with the state dept of education to expand this local successful partnership to a state wide effort including developing a safety curriculum for all career technical schools in the state.
     
  • State-wide Youth Alliance agreement was drafted and submitted to the Regional Office for review on April 3, 2006.
     
  • The State-wide agreement was approved for implementation on May 9, 2006. The signing date for the agreement is currently pending. However, once this agreement is signed and implemented the Mobile Youth Alliance will be formally concluded.

V. Upcoming Milestones in FY 2006
  • Alliance members to become part of the State-wide Youth alliance focusing training assistance to educators focusing on technical/career schools.
     
  • Alliance members to assist state of Alabama in coordinating OSHA 501/500 (train-the-trainer) course to qualified teachers throughout the State of Alabama.
     
  • Participants will include OSHA (Mobile and Birmingham Area Offices), AL/MS Chapter of the ASSE, the Alabama Dept of Education Career/Technical Education Section (ALSDE C/TE) and Safe State Consultation Program
