Overview

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Florida Institute of Safety and Construction at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) agreed to establish an Alliance to promote safe and healthful working conditions for employees in the construction industry.

The implementation team consisted of representatives from the Fort Lauderdale OSHA Area Office and the Florida Institute of Safety and Construction at Florida Atlantic University (FAU)

II. Implementation Team Meetings

Quarterly Meetings:
  • Feb. 10, 2006, Alliance renewal signed at FAU
  • April 26, 2006, Safety committee meeting with the Construction Association of South Florida
  • Sept 28, 2006, members conducted meeting to discuss hurricane preparedness
  • May 11, 2007, group met with the new OSHA Area Director in Ft. Lauderdale, to discuss the Alliance

  • March 31, 2006, class graduated from the Accredited Program for Construction Safety
     
  • December 14, 2006, class graduated from the Accredited Program for Construction Safety
     
  • August 24, 2007, class graduated from the Accredited Program for Construction Safety
     
  • Conducted OSHA 10-hour Construction and General Industry, Scaffolding, Steel Erection, Excavation and various other safety & health related classes

  • Assisted in the distribution of safety and health outreach material developed by OSHA such as hurricane fact sheets and quick cards
     
  • Assisted in the distribution of safety & health outreach material developed by OSHA Region IV, such as the Struck-By, Photo and Falls CDs along with the Tool Box Review Booklet

Promoting the National Dialogue on Workplace Safety and Health

  • February 22, 2007, participated in the Construction Safety Expo sponsored by the Construction Association South Florida (CASF) Alliance, which also includes the OSHA - Ft. Lauderdale Area Office
     
  • Conducted two 27 hour Survival Spanish classes for the construction industry.
