    Overview

    The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Athens Technical College (Athens Tech) Alliance is focused on providing Athens Tech students, business partners and others with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect employees' health and safety, particularly exposure to hazards during operations involving powered industrial trucks, lockout/tagout, bloodborne pathogens, electrical, hazards communications, machine guarding and confined space.

  2. Implementation Team Membership and Contributors:

    The Implementation Team included representatives from OSHA and Athens Tech. The participants in this Alliance communicated quarterly via e-mail.

    Training and Education

    Events

    • During this period, the Alliance group, through Athens Tech, conducted over 49 classes focused on occupational safety and health. These courses addressed a wide range of safety and health training topics including the following:
      • Lockout/Tagout;
      • Machine Guarding;
      • Electrical Safety;
      • Arc Flash Safety;
      • Forklift Safety;
      • Personal Protective Equipment;
      • First Aid/ Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR);
      • Hazard Communications;
      • HAZWOPER; and
      • Permit-Required Confined Space Entry and Rescue
    • During this period, the Alliance group, through Athens Tech, conducted an OSHA Recordkeeping training course and the OSHA 10-hour construction safety and health course.

    Outreach and Communication

    Events

    • During this period, safety and health was promoted by the Alliance group, through Athens Tech, at the following events: monthly Athens Employer Group meetings; the Oconee Business EXPO; and the Veterans Job Fair.
    • During this period, the Alliance group, through Athens Tech, conducted a free Lunch & Learn event, which focused on arc flash safety.
    • During this period, the Alliance group, through Athens Tech, effectively promoted a wide range of events using a mass emailing system, which is referred to as an E-mail Blast. These events included upcoming safety and health courses, as well as the OSHA Heat Illness Prevention Campaign.

  4. Results

    • During this period, Athens Tech conducted over 5,300 student-hours of safety training and provided safety training to a total of 460 students. Athens Tech continues to meet with new employers in their community, promoting the benefits of an effective safety and health management system (SHMS).
  5. Upcoming Milestones

    • Renew the Alliance agreement.
    • Continue to stress the importance of Arc Flash protection analysis and training to companies in the community.
    • Continue to promote safety and health awareness through the Lunch & Learn Educational Programs.
