Overview

OSHA and Athens Tech hereby form an Alliance to provide Athens Tech students, business partners and others with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect employees' health and safety, particularly hard-to-reach and youth workers in reducing and preventing exposure to hazards during operations involving powered industrial trucks, lockout/tagout, bloodborne pathogens, electrical, hazards communications, machine guarding and confined space.

II. Implementation Team Membership

OSHA and Athens Tech hereby form an Alliance to provide Athens Tech students, business partners and others with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect employees' health and safety, particularly hard-to-reach and youth workers in reducing and preventing exposure to hazards during operations involving powered industrial trucks, lockout/tagout, bloodborne pathogens, electrical, hazards communications, machine guarding and confined space.

Training and Education

Events
  • Conducted over 4710 student-hours of safety training.
  • Trained 437 students
  • Held over 65 training classes with over 218 hours of classroom and practical application. The training topics included the following:
    • Lockout/Tagout
    • HAZWOPER
    • Electrical Safety
    • Forklift Safety
    • Portable Fire Extinguisher
    • Personal Protective Equipment
    • Hazard Communications
    • Confined Space
    • OSHA Recordkeeping
    • Machine Guarding
    • Welding Safety
    • Chemical Safety
    • HVAC Safety
Products
  • Conducted safety reviews for five companies
  • Developed written safety procedures for one company
  • Developed marketing materials for outreach efforts
  • Wrote a safety procedure specifically for a new "Poultry House Maintenance Program"
Outreach and Communication

Events
  • On December 20, 2007, an OSHA representative participated in the Athens Safety Fair
  • Hosted a Contractor Safety Lunch and Learn meeting to discuss a potential standardized contractor safety program.
  • Participated in several conferences and events to promote industrial safety, including the following:
    • Athens Clarke County Expo
    • Athens Employer Committee Job Fair
    • Broad River Employer Committee Briefing
    • Employer Meetings and Safety Discussions
  • Employed a new Adjunct safety instructor with a background in paramedic and fire fighter training, to further expand our area of operation and expertise.
Products
  • Developed a Safety Awareness brochure with the College's safety training capability and mass mailed to over 330 customers
  • Continued the informational email blast program with items of safety interest, safety training schedules, and contact information.
IV. Results

In addition to the activities listed above, this group conducted the first sessions for construction industry, water production industry, and civil engineering companies. The Alliance group also conducted training for Hispanics in the construction industry.

V. Upcoming Milestones in FY 2007
  • Offer and conduct the school's first outdoor power line safety session for the landscaping Industry
  • Conduct the school's first safety class in Spanish for employees in the landscaping industry
  • Continue our outreach and education efforts
  • Expand the range of new hire and continuing education training, focused on safety and health for employers
