Alliance Overview
OSHA and the National Association of Women in Construction, Chapter # 96 will provide the Association Members and others with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect employee’s health and safety particularly in reducing and preventing exposure to construction hazards.

This report covers a one year period, starting May 2010 and ending May 2011.
Alliance Activity
- Training and Education
Conducted several training seminars (March and April, 2011) “OSHA’s New Crane & Derrick Standard in Construction”.
NAWIC, Chapter #96 held its 17th Annual Block Kids Competition (5 February 2011) One Hundred Forty elementary students participated. The students were informed of the need for safety on the job site and the proper personal protective equipment that would be required such as hard hats, safety glasses, and shoes, etc. The students then built their projects which were judged by professionals from the construction industry as well as owners and architects.

Events
The ABC’s of Fire Extinguishers – October 12th, 2010
Fire Prevention Month – Educate all of the members on the proper use of fire extinguishers, identification and classification of fires and demonstrated a controlled burn.
Members attended a job site tour of the Wilmington Hospital presented by Skanska, Inc. (Construction Managers for the project). March 2011
Members attended a Personal Safety Demonstration with hands on training by the Wilmington Police Department. March 2011
- Products
Monthly newsletters produced and distributed on the NAWIC, Chapter # 96 website. Topics include but not limited to Winter Storm and Extreme Cold Preparedness, Heart Attack Warning Signs, OSHA’s On-Site Consultation Service, Severe Violators Enforcement Program, Managing Stress, and Heat Exhaustion / Sunstroke.

Results
This Alliance can be considered a success. It has met several objectives during the course of this evaluation period; it was to establish a Safety Training Committee that will be responsible for communicating the alliance’s goals and providing training and updates on OSHA regulations to NAWIC Chapter # 96’s members on a quarterly basis. Additionally, the alliance promoted construction safety and health education to area youth through the Annual Block Kids Program.
July 2009, the Department of Labor solicited and submitted information to the White House Council on Women and Girls regarding this alliance. Updates have been provided to the Council regarding the performance and progress made concerning Chapter # 96.
Note: NAWIC has a membership of 5,500 with approximately 170 chapters in almost every U.S. state. NAWIC has grown world wide and has International Affiliation agreements with the Canadian Association of Women in Construction, NAWIC – Australia, NAWIC – New Zealand, NAWIC – United Kingdom and South African Women in Construction.

Attempting to provide the OSHA 10 Hour Construction Course for its membership for the upcoming fiscal year.
Providing NAWIC membership training regarding the implementation of the Compliance Directive for Residential Construction (STD 03-11-002)
