    Alliance Overview.

    OSHA and the Delaware Safety Council, Inc. have provided the council members and others with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help them protect employee’s health and safety, particularly in developing defensive driving and forklift safety courses for corporate fleet operations and businesses throughout their service area.

  3. Activities and Products

    Evaluation Period.

    This report covers a one year period, starting June 2009 and ending June 2010.

    Alliance Activity.
     
    • Training and Education

      Conducted numerous training seminars regarding Forklift Operations and a Train the Trainer Program which were well attended by council membership, 88 employees received formal Forklift Operations Certificates. Approximately 20 employees received the Train the Trainer certificates for the Forklift Operators Course.

      Additional training courses provided are the Flagger Training Course, individuals performing Flagger functions on Delaware Highways must receive certification training prior to working this job. These students are trained in accordance with the 2009 edition of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) for streets and highways. The council certified 1, 367 individuals in the year 2009.

      Conducted the “Corporate Driver Evaluation Program” which is a behind the wheel driver evaluation program for corporations with employees who had access to company vehicles. This program provides specific feedback concerning driving techniques that may be flawed and are in need of correction. In 2009, 21 drivers from various Delaware based companies participated in this program.

      CPR and First Aid Certification courses recorded positive results for this past year. Approximately 340 employees from various companies throughout the State of Delaware received this life saving training.
       
    • Outreach and Communication

      Events

      “Eggs with OSHA”, A popular breakfast series which is held bi-annually, (October 15, 2009 and May 21, 2010), topics included but were not limited to “OSHA’s New Direction and Priorities” with an emphasis on strong enforcement, change in penalty structure, H1N1, and limited information concerning the Protecting America’s Worker’s Act. HR.2067.

      Training

      Training seminars were held during the months of September 2009, October 2009, and December 2009 concerning Forklift Safety and Forklift Instructor Development Courses. Some additional occupational safety courses were negatively affected by the economy and thus cancelled.
       
    • Products

      Regular distribution of safety advisories to the local media during the year resulted in interviews on CN-8-TV, WDEL Radio, Community Newspapers, ON- Line Delaware as well as other media outlets.
       
  4. Results

    This Alliance is considered a success. It has met several objectives during the course of this evaluation period including the development of training materials and programs, educating employers and employees on Defensive Driving skills for the corporate fleet as well as the safe operation of material handling equipment. The ATSSA (American Traffic Safety Services Association) Flagger Training Courses enjoyed one of the best years ever recorded at the Council.

  5. Upcoming Milestones

    Attempting to provide the OSHA 10 Hour Construction Course for its membership for the upcoming fiscal year, as well as the OSHA 500 Courses, Construction Safety Courses, Electrical Safety Training, Incident Investigation, and Warehouse Safety.
