    Speaker Notes:

The Alliance Program continues to produce concrete results in the form of compliance assistance tools, presentations, training resources and outreach to assist employers in the reduction of injuries, illnesses, and fatalities and to promote the national dialogue on workplace Safety and Health.

Training Events: New training resources have been developed and delivered through Alliances. During FY 2008, as of the 2nd quarter; 11 events have taken place which reached close to 250 participants. During FY 2007, 27 training events took place and reached close to 4,650 participants. Notable examples include Altec Industries, Incorporated's, "Crane Operator Training," Industrial Truck Association's (ITA), "Industrial Truck Best Practices Seminar: "Forklift Safety: Man, Machine & Environment," and National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), "How to Build a House" Seminar.

Speeches and Exhibits: OSHA frequently conducts outreach for the Alliance Program by delivering presentations and exhibiting at conferences. For example, During FY 2008, as of the 2nd quarter; OSHA had more than 38 speaking engagements which reached more than 3,400 participants and exhibited 27 events with almost 17,700 attendees visiting the exhibition booths and more than 270,000 total event attendees. During FY 2007, OSHA exhibited with National Alliance Program participants in 67 events with almost 15,500 attendees visiting the exhibit booths and more than 374,000 total event attendees. In addition, OSHA provided publications for distribution at 43 National Alliance Program related events. Also, representatives of OSHA's National Office, Regional, and Area Offices participated in more than 109 speaking engagements to over 14,500 attendees on or related to the Alliance Program. Alliance participants also make presentations or exhibit at safety and health related conferences.

Electronic Assistance Tools: Alliance Program participants work with OSHA to develop and implement a variety of projects, including electronic assistance tools to meet the goals of their agreements. These compliance assistance products contribute directly to furthering workplace safety and health. Electronic assistance tools, including Safety and Health Topics pages and eTools, are Web-based training tools. Alliance members are contributing as Editorial Board members on more than 90 eTools and Safety and Health Topics pages.

eTools: Through the OSHA and American Association of Occupational Health Nurses, Inc. (AAOHN), Association of Occupational Health Professionals in Healthcare (AOHP), Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Alliances; representatives from OSHA and the organizations provided expertise and input during the update of OSHA's Bloodborne Pathogen Module of the Hospital eTool. This module was posted to the Agency Web site in March 2008. As of March 2008, 13 eTools had been revised or developed collaboratively by Alliance participants and OSHA. Alliance Program participants are on the editorial boards of 9 eTools.

Safety and Health Topics Pages: Through OSHA and the ISSA Alliance, representatives from ISSA collaborated and provided expertise and input into the development of a Cleaning Industry Safety and Health Topics. This new Safety and Health Topics page was launched in December 2007. Since the Alliance Program's implementation, more than 85 Safety and Health Topics pages have been updated by Alliance participants and OSHA. 23 Safety and Health Topics pages have been developed as products of the Alliance Program.

Publications, Case Studies and Success Stories: Through the OSHA and American Pyrotechnics Association (APA) Alliance, representatives from the APA provided expertise and input into the development of OSHA's Fireworks Safety Tips Card. The two-sided card includes tips for Display Operators and Retail Fireworks Sales. 12,500 of these tips cards have been distributed by OSHA and the APA. In addition, through the Alliance Program, OSHA has developed a number of case studies with Alliance Program participants, including Abbott, The Steel Group, The Dow Chemical Company, and Washington Group International. Through the OSHA and Graphic Arts Coalition Alliance, OSHA and Ritrama were able to publish the following case study: "Ritrama Invests in Safety and Improves Its Bottom Line," in June 2007. This case study describes how Ritrama, a multi-national corporation, designed and implemented a safety and health program to educate the managers, supervisors and employees about safe work practices and company-specific procedures at its manufacturing plant in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As a result of the program, the company reduced its workers' compensation premiums, increased productivity and product quality, and improved its employee recruitment and retention. Other case studies address workplace safety and health topics such as ergonomics, motor vehicle safety and construction and are posted on OSHA's Web site. Through the Alliance Program, OSHA developed and posted to its Web site, the following Alliance-Related Success Stories; 24 regional and area office success stories, eight ergonomics success stories, and five national success stories during fiscal year 2008. Examples of these stories are "Nantucket Club Works with OSHA On-Site Consultation Program to Enhance Safety and Health Program," "OSHA's Region II Alliance With the Voluntary Protection Programs Participants' Association Trains over 600 Employees at a Family Health and Safety Fair," "Alliance among OSHA Region V Peoria, Illinois Area Office, Richland Community College and the Illinois On-site Safety and Health Consultation Program Works to Increases Employee Awareness of Hazards in General, Construction and Service Industries," "Success with Ergonomics: Transporting Cutting Dies with Hand Truck," and "Small Contractor Develops a Safety and Health Training Manual."

Media Coverage: OSHA continues to work to inform the media about the Alliance Program. OSHA regularly issues news releases to announce Alliance signings and Program successes. During FY 2008, as of the 2nd quarter; 201 articles were published with 54 OSHA news releases. 362 articles were published on the Alliance Program with 80 OSHA news releases during fiscal year 2007. 387 articles were published on the Alliance Program, with at least 75 news releases, during Fiscal Year 2006. There are a multitude of articles highlighting Alliance Program products, events, activities and successes. Three examples of the publications which feature articles about the Alliance Program are the Occupational Health and Safety Magazine (March 2008), The Synergist: Protecting Worker Health Magazine (February 2008) and Professional Safety: Journal of the American Society of Safety Engineers Magazine (November, December 2007; January, February 2008).
