Old XRD Sample Insertion

The early unit was manually fed samples. Note the brass ring which holds in place the sample (a silver membrane filter containing a thin layer deposition of particulate from an air sample). Samples are spun inside the unit to allow a more uniform presentation of the sample to the x-ray beam. The silver is used as an internal calibration on an intense silver diffraction line prior to a scan for silica, allows an immediate assessment of instrument operation for each sample, and denotes any absorption of x-rays via a decreased silver signal intensity for an individual sample.
