Analysis of Mt. St. Helens Dust

A diffraction pattern output of a sample taken after the Mt. St. Helen’s eruption. Note the three different diffraction angles used for quartz and one for cristobalite. The tertiary angle (TERT QTZ) for quartz also shows how an interfernece can be compensated for by stripping out an interefering substance (first peak) and integrating only the shaded area (quartz peak). This sample contains approximately 3% quartz and 6% cristobalite.
